Siting Chicken Nesting Boxes
Whether you have purchased chicken nesting boxes or made your own you should ensure that they are sited properly. Although hens are hardy birds they will be much happier if you can give them some comfort and a nice nesting box.
You should ensure that the bedding is comfortable. Use sawdust or shredded newspaper which is easy to obtain and will also work wonders if added to a compost heap.
When siting the box we should try to ensure that we firstly make access easy. This means not placing it to high off the ground. You want it easy for the birds to get access. I have also found that young hens tend to not always lay the eggs in the box so I try to place the boxes on the ground. This means that if they lay an egg and it does not fall in the box it is less likely to break as it does not have far to fall.
Site the nesting boxes out of any draughts. This is easy to accomplish but should be done whenever possible. Don't place in the direction of any prevailing winds and away from windows or any other ventilation spots. These few simple tips will ensure that the hens are happy and will be at their most productive. They really do ask very little so ensure that the chicken nesting boxes are ideally placed to make egg production be at the absolute peak. If your hen is broody then the above tips are even more important as the bird will be in the box for quite some time.
