Making Chicken Nesting Boxes
For many new and experienced chicken owners building chicken nesting boxes is the preferred method. They are fairly simple to make and can be made form a variety of materials.
From washing up bowls, to old crates, there are often items around the house that can serve the purpose. There is also the option of making one out of wood. The designs can be as simple or as complicated as we wish. If it is to be made from wood then it is important that you build something with a roof. This roof should be steeply sloped to ensure that it is not possible for the hens to perch on it. If it is not angled enough then you will find that it becomes very messy very quickly.
Another alternative is to house it underneath a solid shelf. This way the birds can perch on the shelf and the boxes will stay clean and tidy. This is a very simple solution and the one I use for my chickens. You should also try to ensure that the box is large enough for the birds. This means making it so that it is slightly larger than a hen. It will not have to be by much, just enough to ensure that the bird can easily fit inside to lay her eggs.
Making chicken nesting boxes can be achieved in a few hours. It is simply a matter of getting the right materials to use. If you do use wood ensure that it is of a very smooth finish. If it is rough then it will be very difficult to clean and you may experience problems in the future with it.
