Building Chicken Nesting Boxes
Building chicken nesting boxes is something more and more owners are looking at now. This way you can build something to the exact dimensions you want and it is not that difficult to do. There are a few pointers that you would be wise to follow if you do decide to build your own.
Firstly you should ensure that you know exactly where the finished product will go. There is nothing worse than making something only to discover that it will not fit. Measure and measure again to ensure that this will not happen. When making the box ensure you will be providing adequate space for the hens to get easy access to the boxes. Make at least one for every three birds but don't be surprised if they all favor the same box. It is what they often seem to do.
Personally I always favor placing them very near to the ground if not on the ground. It simply means that the hens are much more likely to their eggs in them rather than on the ground. Hunting around for eggs can be a chore avoided if you do this. They also seem to lay very early in the morning if the boxes are sited very low. I am not sure why but it does seem to be the case.
Building chicken nesting boxes can be achieved in a matter of hours if you have the right materials. Choose carefully what you will make them from and ensure that you provide them with adequate room for their laying.
